Rise
The rise is the length (in inches) from the top of the waist of the jeans to the crotch.
The rise is very important in the fit of your jeans. Not only does it matter for appearance reasons (i.e. butt cleavage), but for comfort as well. Here are some important notes to study:
- Ultra Low-rise: 3-5 inches below the navel
Low-rise: ~7 inches or less or 2-3 inches below the navel
Mid-rise: ~8-9 inches
High-rise: ~ 10 inches or more - The most flattering rise for you is one whose waist falls 1-2 inches below your navel.
- Look for brands that have a contoured waist. This means that the rise is much higher in the back than in the front. This gives you a low-rise look, without giving you "butt cleavage".
- Don’t be afraid to wear low-rise jeans - as long as you don’t go too low. If the rise is too high and the waistband frames your hips incorrectly, you can end up looking hippy. If it is too low and cuts into your stomach, you risk being a victim of the infamous "muffin top." (Note: This is NEVER, EVER sexy)
- The crotch should fit comfortably without grabbing.
- Higher rise jeans are making a comeback. HOWEVER, do not compromise a flattering look for a trendy style. Do not forget about your lower rise jeans!!! Low-rise jeans are recommended especially for those who want to:
- flatter their rear
- flatter a flat tummy and slim hips
- add curves
- give the illusion of a longer torso
