Inseam

The inseam is the length (in inches) of the seam on the inside of the leg from the crotch to the bottom hem of a pair of jeans.

If you are buying a traditional style of jeans (NOT capris, cropped, ankle, gauchos etc.):

  • Make sure the jeans are the right length for you whether you plan to wear them with sneakers, flats, or heels. However:
    • If you are buying for sneakers or flats, the pant legs should break (fold in) at the ankle
    • If you are buying for heels, the hem should hit 1 inch above the floor. This is usually the low midpoint of the back of the heel.
    • If you love your jeans enough to want to be able to wear them anywhere with any shoe, request that you tailor create an angled hem. That way, you won’t wear out the back... unless you’re trying to create that "worn" look.
  • They should reach the top of your footwear in the front and cover most of the foot, but not so long that they drag on the floor along the sides and in the back.
  • The pant leg should not bunch up at the ankle... the only exception can be skinny/stovepipe jeans. With skinny/stovepipes, this great look can actually elongate the leg.
