Cut

The cut is the shape of the leg.

This is the biggest differentiating factor among jean "styles." Some of the different cuts include:

* Bootcut: The ankle is about 1-1½ inches wider than the knee. A bootcut leg looks good on just about EVERY body type. They elongate the leg, and help to balance out a woman’s proportions. Regardless of your body type - you can’t go wrong with this one.

  • Straight: A straight narrow leg in which the knee and ankle are the same width.
  • Flare: Ankle is significantly wider than bootcut
  • Skinny/Stovepipe: Fitted close to leg from thigh to ankle
  • Capri: A leg that ends anywhere between just below the knee and mid-calf
  • Cropped: Similar to capris, although tend to be cut longer than mid-calf length
  • Ankle: As the name implies, cut right above the ankle
  • Gaucho: A cropped wide leg
  • Boycut: A more relaxed fit

But, before you rush off to buy those stovepipe jeans, there are fit rules to follow as well. See Body Types for your recommended cuts.
